SMS Auxilliary News From The Auxiliary The by-laws amendments included changing the time of the monthly meetings to 7 p.m. and the dues commencing in 2010 will be $24 annually. Most importantly, the attending members voted to allow women of Italian descent to join the Auxiliary as non-voting members if they do not have a male counterpart as a member of the SMS Lodge. Further, there is no longer a residency requirement as long as dues are paid and current. At the Chinese auction, $185.00 was raised and contributed to the pantry at the House of Concern in Seneca Falls. Members are currently planning their annual banquet to be held on June 10, 2009 at Abigail’s Restaurant. All members are invited to come and are encouraged to bring guests. For further information about joining the Auxiliary or attending the banquet, please call the Auxiliary at 521-3461. The SMS Auxiliary is a 70-member familial organization formed in 1931 to assist the SMS Lodge in their outreach to the Italian community. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. Auxiliary Cookbooks on Sale About SMS Auxilliary Before 1931 the women of the SMS joined the men’s organization, which had been founded in 1906. In April 1931 the men proposed that the women form their own organization under the banner and rules of the men’s club, on June 11, 1931 the SMS Auxiliary was born. The first President was Olga Pioli, Vice –President was Elsie Fornesi, Treasurer- Giuseppina Tamburrino, and Secretary- Lidia Centra. The following were the first group of members: Carmela Angarola The function of the auxiliary was to promote mutual aid for members, the men’s society and the community. During W.W. II the women rolled bandages, baked for wounded veterans, held dances and fundraisers for various causes. Today the women continue to be a major factor in the community and county. They work at the St. Anthony’s Festival; they give awards to the school for several projects, donate to the Catholic Church, Seneca Falls Historical Society and various other organizations. Today after 75 years the SMS Auxiliary is still going strong.
